Stop Motion: Good vs. Evil

  1. Amanda, I really liked your stop motion project and how it had a funny playful story. I think that the utilization of the pipe cleaners to make your angel and devil characters was a smart and creative solution to making your hero and villain. I like how you applied your colors in your stop motion. I like how your most prominent color in your animation was the red hue. I like how this created the affinity in your stop motion animation project. I don’t think that it is a problem because your characters are the ones that contrast each other and the action makes up for the affinity as well. I like how your hero and villain were in very bright colors and so did your human character. I like that the red was a symbolic foreshadowing tool that you did a great job integrating into your stop motion. To me it symbolized that the man in your story was already predetermined to follow the devil’s advice and smoke the cigarette. It was a good story telling device. I also liked how your colors in your images looked to be saturated. The colors seemed to really pop to my eye.

  2. Amanda very cute short. The movements throughout the video were great. I wish I’d thought of pipe cleaners to use the action figures were probably worse than trying to direct teens on a CW tv show. The movements I think were done great. The angel has the ability to fly pretty standard stuff for an angel but the devil can’t instead he jumps up and has to hold on to the ear to prevent himself from falling and creates a sense of weight by doing this. I think him doing that in the scene maybe my favorite part. The devil eventually wins which is pretty priceless in my opinion and the angel gets flicked away as that happens to top and the bottom get closer together as his stomach goes out creating a parallel movement. I couldn’t really spot any overlapping characteristics but you don’t need them the short gets by on the rest. The movement of the devil obviously gives the short a playful tone. When you presented I didn’t even think about the blatant contrast of the characters I mean what could be more contrasting than an angel and a devil.

  3. I thought you did a great job with your stop motion. Your color choices really worked well. The hues and saturation you chose were perfect for the plot of your stop motion. The brightness of the red of the devil contrasted well with the soft white color of the angel. The red creates tension and is often associated with evil, as white is often associated with purity. These color choices did a great job representing the theme you were trying to create with the stop motion. I like how you framed up your characters. The background creates affinity throughout the animation. The virtual lines created by the character’s nose and chin help frame the angel and devil. It draws the point of interest to both of them. I liked the media you used to create your characters. The pipe cleaners seemed easy to manipulate in each shot. I liked how you positioned the angel and devil on the character’s shoulder and had them move around. The devil crawled around more than the angel, which signified that he was sneaky and a trickster. The thought bubble was very creative. I liked how the bubble developed as the character was thinking; it was very well timed. I liked the fact that you used a simple concept to build your stop motion. Even though it was a simple concept it was not boring. You did a great job making it engaging and fun to watch. Overall I thought it was both fun and creative.

  4. One of my favorite villain hero combos was the simplicity of the angel and devil. Since they already have the connotation of being mortal enemies. And their base color of red to white made them easily identifiable to the audience. But they went further then that and hade their movements at odds in both of the videos. The devil was always more aggressive and evil in the videos while the angel only ever reacted to the devil and was trying to save the person in both videos. The colors used to portray them really helped set each character apart. The dark red was at such a contrast to the white of the angel, not to mention that they played off the fact about the emotions each carried, red being darker more menacing while the white of the angel tried to get a feel of savior and peace. In one video they took it a step further by adding clouds and birds to the mix to further enforce the two characters purposes and goals. I liked how it both videos it was clear how each had weight and would react accurately if the other attacked or hit them, the devils body bending from getting kicked by the angel and the angel getting flicked of the shoulder of the person to go flying through the air. Even with these movements there was contrast as in one movie the devil was constantly crawling around the mans head while the angel only really moved when it got flicked off by the person.
